A recently released study shows that jobs in the public sector require more education than comparable jobs in the private sector, while public sector workers earn 11-12% less for those jobs. The Center for State and Local Government Excellence and the National Institute on Retirement Security describe how long-term patterns show that the average compensation of state and local employees is not excessive.
