Brew-Making Tour at New Helvetia

Publication Date: Mon, Dec-8-2014

New Helvetia Brewery likes to say that they brew beer with a mix of art, science, love and hops. That was evident when AFSCME Local 146 members met with the brains behind the brewery, Dave Gull, for a special Union-only tour.

Founded as an homage to Sacramento’s own Buffalo Brewing Company, Gull shared the secret to the great beer: there are only 4 core ingredients (malt, water, hops, and yeast).

As usual, our Union policy prohibits dues money being spent on alcohol, so members purchased their own beverages.

The brew tour, which generated great solidarity among the members, was a hit and the members that participated in the event returned together the following week to have even more solidarity time together. Great solidarity is what builds great Unions.

So, how did the members that participated find out about the event? Terry Chunn (pictured above) from SETA, made the brew tour his first Union solidarity event and he found out about it by reading our newsletters and word of mouth from his co-worker, Ronald Dent. This proves an important point: members should talk to other members about articles and events in our newsletters to help spread the word and build our Union.

Janice Edwards, also from SETA, said “I really have a good time when I come out to the Union functions. I think other employees really should come out, they really don’t know what they are missing!”

A short video of the event can be viewed on our Local 146 YouTube Channel, type “AFSCME Local 146” into the search box on the YouTube front page to see this and other AFSCME Local 146 videos.
